Rutgers Master Gardener Helpline
The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Hunterdon County are trained and able to assist County residents with a myriad of home gardening issues, including: providing the materials and information needed to obtain a proper soil sample for analysis, lawn care, and plant, tree and shrub identification, advice about the right plant for the right place and recommendations on native plant materials. With suitable samples, the Rutgers Master Gardeners can also help diagnose plant diseases, identify insects, weeds and other pests of the home and garden, and give written advice about the cultural recommendations for their control following sustainable and evidence-based techniques.
For identifying plant problems, several plant samples should be collected that represent the range of symptoms. For trees and shrubs, 6 to 8 inch pieces that include any leaves, flowers or fruit. Both a healthy and an “affected” sample work best for identification. Regarding insect pests of the home and or garden, please include a live or dead intact insect. Bring samples to the Master Gardener Helpline in a paper, or plastic bag, or clear container.
Note: It is important to provide your mailing address, email address and phone number when you contact the Master Gardeners. Residents can call our Rutgers Master Gardener Helpline or come to the Cooperative Extension office for horticultural information and help with various gardening problems.
